What should you do if you think you have the measles?

To help control the spread of measles, experts say people who think they're infected should take precautions before visiting a doctor’s office or the emergency room.

As measles spreads across the country, sick children and adults are exposing other patients — including newborn babies — when they seek care at hospitals, pediatrician’s offices and urgent care centers.

To help control the spread of measles, one of the world’s most contagious viruses, medical experts say people with suspected cases should take precautions before visiting a doctor’s office or the emergency room.

“I never want to discourage anyone from seeking care,” said Dr. Alison Haddock, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians. But “measles is highly contagious and it is dangerous to expose others.”

Walking into a crowded clinic or emergency department, especially without a mask, can infect others in the waiting room, including patients who are pregnant, medically vulnerable or immunocompromised, said Dr. Ari Brown, a pediatrician in Austin, Texas, and spokeswoman for the American Academy of Pediatrics. An unvaccinated child with measles, who had been infected while traveling abroad, sparked an outbreak in San Diego in 2008 that included children in the waiting room of a pediatrician’s office.

“If you have any concerns” about being infected with measles, “do not just show up at the pediatrician’s office. Do not just show up at the ER,” Brown said. “Call first so they can be prepared.”

As of Friday, the U.S. has seen upward of 500 measles cases in at least 20 states and Washington, D.C. since the beginning of the year. The majority are in Texas, where an outbreak on the western edge of the state has grown to 400 cases and spilled into New Mexico and Oklahoma. Two people have died, including a 6-year-old girl.

While anyone who is unvaccinated can be infected with measles, patients in hospitals and clinics may be especially vulnerable to complications, especially if they are pregnant, immunocompromised or in fragile health, Brown said. The measles virus can survive in the air for two hours after an infected person leaves the room, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, suggested alerting ER staff that someone with measles is on their way.

Schaffner also advised people to bring a second adult to the ER along with the sick patient. While one adult waits outside the building with the sick patient, the second adult should go inside, notify the ER staff and find out what precautions to take before bringing a potentially infected patient inside.

ER staff may need time to prepare an isolation room for someone with measles. These rooms have specialized airflow and filtration systems to prevent airborne viruses from drifting into public areas, Haddock said.

Given the overcrowding in most ERs, however, “staff may need to rearrange patients to make this room available to you,” Haddock said.

Measles patients and their family members or caregivers should wear masks when in any health care facility, Haddock said. ER staff may ask people with measles to enter through a special door, such as the ambulance bay, to reduce the risk of exposing other patients.

Few primary care practices have isolation rooms, also known as negative air pressure rooms, Brown said.

Doctors may prefer to see people with suspected measles cases by telehealth. Other doctors may choose to see patients in the parking lot — a common practice during the Covid pandemic, Brown said. Alternatively, doctors may see patients with suspected measles infections at the end of the day, after other patients have left the clinic.

Even mild cases of measles can make people feel miserable.

“It’s not just a normal fever and a rash,” said Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “These kids are sick.”

About 20% of people who get the measles are hospitalized. In children, the most common causes of hospitalization are pneumonia or dehydration, caused by diarrhea, Offit said.

There’s no specific treatment for measles, Offit said, other than supportive care, such as fluids and fever-reducing medications. Antibiotics don’t help a measles infection because it’s caused by a virus, although doctors may prescribe antibiotics for children who develop secondary bacterial infections. Doctors recommend that children get a lot of rest. Children may feel better in a dark room, because measles can make them sensitive to light.

Although many children with the measles can be safely treated at home, parents should call a doctor if their child appears short of breath or dehydrated, Offit said. It’s easy for children with fevers to become dehydrated, especially if they have diarrhea and aren’t able to drink enough fluids.

Offit, who has treated many measles patients, said he has diagnosed the illness on the basis of symptoms — including a fever, cough, runny nose, pink eye, sensitivity to light and white spots on the inside of the mouth. Many younger doctors have never seen the measles, however, and may miss the diagnosis. Doctors can make a definitive diagnosis with a blood test or by swabbing a patients’ nose or throat. It can take several days to get results back from a hospital or public health lab.

Brown notes that many people don’t realize they have measles and may believe they have a bad case of the flu. That’s because the characteristic red measles rash doesn’t show up for four days after symptoms start. The rash follows a pattern, beginning on the face at the hairline and gradually spreading down the body. People are contagious for four days before the rash appears and four days after; patients should stay home during this time to avoid infecting others.

Because measles has a long incubation time, unvaccinated people can reduce their risk of measles by getting a vaccine within 72 hours of exposure, Offit said. Measles vaccines are extremely effective, with two doses preventing 97% of infections.

Bangladesh ex-PM Sheikh Hasina accused of plotting to overthrow govt

The most recent case involves a virtual meeting held in December with almost 600 members of the Awami League, during which police alleged that a plot was discussed to "initiate civil war in Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi police said on Friday (March 28, 2025) they had filed a new criminal case against ousted premier Sheikh Hasina over an alleged plot to overthrow the government that replaced her.

Ms. Hasina is currently exiled in neighbouring India, her autocratic regime's biggest patron and benefactor, after she was overthrown in a student-led revolution last August.

Numerous criminal indictments have been issued against her and top loyalists of her Awami League party, including over a crackdown by security forces that killed hundreds of demonstrators during last year's unrest.

The latest case centres on a virtual meeting attended by nearly 600 Awami League members in December, which police said had conspired to "wage civil war in Bangladesh" with the aim of restoring Ms. Hasina to power.

"Many of them, both inside and outside the country, pledged to continue their fight until their last breath," the case documents stated.

Police spokesman Jasim Uddin Khan told AFP that charges had initially been filed against Ms. Hasina and 72 others, but that the number of defendants may increase as the investigation progressed.

"The number of participants in the virtual meeting was 577. We are investigating their roles, and if found complicit in the conspiracy, they will be charged," he said.

A report from the U.N. rights office earlier this year stated that Ms. Hasina's government was responsible for systematic attacks and killings of protesters as it attempted to hold onto power last year.

Bangladesh is currently being led by an interim administration with Nobel peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, 84, at the helm.

His caretaker government is tasked with implementing democratic reforms ahead of fresh elections slated to take place by June 2026.

– Tremors were also felt throughout northern Thailand and down to Bangkok, where residents fled to the streets as buildings shook. Visuals shared on social media showed a building collapse in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district.

– Due to the tremors, some metro and light rail services were suspended in Thailand's Bangkok. Jolts of the Myanmar earthquake were also felt in Vietnam.

– Tremors were also felt in China's southwest Yunnan province, with Beijing's quake agency reporting the jolt as a 7.9 magnitude earthquake.

– Earthquakes are relatively common in Myanmar, where between 1930 and 1956, six strong quakes of 7.0 magnitude or higher struck near the Sagaing Fault, which runs north to south through the center of the country, according to the USGS.

– Mild tremors were felt in West Bengal's Kolkata and Manipur's Imphal as well after the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar. According to official sources cited by news agency PTI, there have been no reports of damage to property or loss of life in the city due to the tremor.

Rain and cooler weather help South Korean fire crews battle devastating wildfires

The wildfires, which have killed 28 people and razed vast swaths of land in the southeast in the last week, were 85% contained as of Friday morning, the Korea Forest Service said.

SEOUL, South Korea — Rain and cooler temperatures helped South Korean fire crews as they battled the country’s
worst-ever wildfires on Friday, as the governor of the hardest-hit region called for overhauling the response to the climate crisis that he says worsened the disaster.

The wildfires, which have killed 28 people and razed vast swaths of land in the southeast in the last week, were 85% contained as of Friday morning, Korea Forest Service chief Lim Sang-seop told a televised briefing. He said authorities would launch “all-out efforts” to extinguish the remaining blazes by bringing more helicopters and firefighters to the areas.

The raging inferno has also destroyed thousands of houses, factories, vehicles and other structures, while mountains and hills were stripped of anything but a carpet of smoldering ashes.

“Hazes have been diminished because of the rain last night, so that’s favorable for securing visibility. Also temperatures are now lower than the last few days, so things are very favorable to put out the wildfires,” Lim said.

Firefighters — many in their 60s, a reflection of one of the world’s fastest-aging populations — navigated forests in yellow helmets and red protective suits, spraying suppressants at flames that flickered near their feet. Helicopters dropped buckets of water over hills that glowed red in the night.

Residents hunkered down in temporary shelters in places like schools and gyms, but the fire crept dangerously close to some of them too. A video shared by one evacuee shows blazes approaching a school soccer field under a sky choked with smoke.

“I just kept crying this morning,” said 79-year-old Seo Jae Tak, an evacuee at a gym in Andong city, on Thursday. “When I went back yesterday, the entire mountain had turned to ashes. It’s just unbelievable, I can’t even put it into words. All I can do is cry.”

Authorities were mobilizing about 9,000 people, 125 helicopters and hundreds of other vehicles to battle the wildfires, the government’s disaster response center said.

The wildfires have burned 118,265 acres of land, forced more than 30,000 people to flee their homes and injured 37 others since last Friday. Officials said Friday that 8,000 residents remained at temporary shelters. The fires have been driven by strong winds and dry weather.

While it is difficult to link any one event to climate change, officials and experts say that it is making wildfires more likely and more severe. Scientists have already warned that the warming atmosphere around the world is driving ever more extreme weather events, including wildfires, flooding, droughts, hurricanes and heat waves that are killing people and causing billions of dollars in damage every year.

“We must completely overhaul our wildfire response strategy in the face of extreme climate conditions,” Lee Cheol-woo, governor of North Gyeongsang Province, said at a news conference.

Lee noted that the past week has shown how wildfires, fueled by dry and windy conditions, can quickly overwhelm the country’s resources. He said he would request that the government establish better evacuation guidelines, adopt more powerful firefighting tools including aircraft equipped with water cannons, and adopt other approaches to improve firefighting efforts during nighttime hours.

“We don’t have the equipment for firefighting at night,” Lee said. “In the night, firefighting is done solely with manual efforts, but with the increased density of our forests compared to the past, it’s difficult to manage with just that.”

On Thursday, Lee Han-kyung, deputy head of the disaster response center, told a meeting that the wildfires showed “the reality of climate crisis that we have yet experienced,” according to the Yonhap news agency.

The people killed were mostly in their 60s or older. They include a pilot whose helicopter crashed during efforts to contain a fire Wednesday and four firefighters and other workers who died earlier after being trapped by fast-moving flames. Officials say older people found it difficult to evacuate quickly but have not provided details of the civilian dead.

In Uiseong, about 20 of the 30 structures at the Gounsa temple complex, which is said to have been originally built in the 7th century, have burned. Among them were two state-designated “treasures”: a pavilion overlooking a stream that dates to 1668, and a Joseon dynasty structure built in 1904 to mark the longevity of a king.

FAA administrator: 'Clearly, something was missed' that led to DC plane crash

Jennifer Homendy addressed the committee members on the midair collision over the Potomac River on January 29, which resulted in the deaths of 67 people.

Acting Federal Aviation Administrator Chris Rocheleau admitted Thursday that "something was missed" regarding the devastating midair collision between an American Airlines plane and an Army helicopter that killed everyone on board both aircraft.

The National Transportation Safety Board said all of the data that shows the regular near misses and close proximity events at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) was publicly available data.

"Between October 2021 and December 2024 there were over 15,000 close proximity events between commercial aircraft and helicopters at DCA," NTSB Chairman Jennifer Homendy said as she and Rocheleau testified before the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Aviation, Space and Innovation.

The crash happened on the night of Jan. 29 when the PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet with 64 people on board was about to land at Reagan. The three soldiers in the helicopter were conducting an annual training flight and night vision goggle check at the time of the collision.

Rocheleau faced tough questioning from senators Thursday over the lack of action taken by the FAA that could have prevented the crash based on the data available to the agency.

"Something was missed at the DCA crash. I take that seriously. I take that on myself," Rocheleau said at the hearing. "I returned to the FAA just two months ago and I care about the National Airspace System for safety and the workforce. I'm dedicated to continuing that work, and I will continue to review what I mentioned before with respect to the hot spots, working closely with NTSB to learn what happened here and to make sure it never happens again."

The FAA said it is now using AI and machine learning to evaluate all the data that comes in showing potential issues in U.S. airspace.

Rocheleau also announced that, effective immediately, almost all aircraft operating around Reagan and downtown D.C. must have their ADS-B Out aviation surveillance technology on -- with the exception of presidential helicopters or other high security sensitive missions. Helicopters like the one that crashed on Jan. 29 are now required to broadcast their position using ADS-B Out technology.

The NTSB also said it's looking at the Army's 12th Aviation Battalion's fleet of helicopters for installation programming and potential for equipment malfunction.

Homendy said there were 16 Lima models of Black Hawk in the fleet, including the helicopter involved in the crash. Eight had stopped transmitting ADS-B Out sometime between May and November 2023. Homendy said the NTSB did not know why they had stopped.

Senators pressed Army Brig. Gen. Matthew Braman on the Army helicopters operating in the DCA airspace without transmitting ADS-B Out data, leading to a fiery discussion between committee chair Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Braman, with Cruz demanding the Army release the memo to the committee within the next 24 hours.

"The Army has a memo August 9, 2024 entitled ADS-B Out Off Operations in the National Airspace. My staff requested that memo from you, and my understanding is your team declined to provide it," Cruz said. "That is also unacceptable. I want to ask you at this hearing, will you commit to providing that memo to this committee?"

Braman said he will look into if the memo can be released to the committee.

After Thursday's hearing, Homendy told reporters that the failure of oversight is not just on the FAA, but on the Army, as well.

Thursday's hearing also revealed that the false alarms that told pilots they were on a collision course with another plane while on approach to Reagan Airport earlier this month were caused by the Secret Service and the Navy improperly testing counter-drone technology, according to an exchange between Cruz and Rocheleau. The testing was being done on the same spectrum that the Traffic Collision Avoidance System in the cockpit uses. Cruz said the Secret Service and the Navy were warned not to use the same spectrum before the false alarm incidents.

The NTSB hopes to complete the investigation into the Reagan crash within a year, Homendy said at Thursday's hearing, noting that divers are still working to recover any remaining wreckage in the Potomac River.

The NTSB will interview the FAA cartographers about the mapping of the route around Reagan; Homendy said there was "virtually no margin of error" in the helicopter routes used around the airport.

Earlier this month, the NTSB called for immediate changes at Reagan, saying the current helicopter routes around the busy airport "pose an intolerable risk to aviation safety."

The NTSB recommended permanently banning helicopter operations near Reagan when runways 15 and 33 are in use and designating an alternative helicopter route for pilots. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy quickly said the Department of Transportation would follow the NTSB's recommendations.

'Survivor' host Jeff Probst cries after contestant opens up about her autism diagnosis

"Wow, this has never happened," Probst said during the March 26 episode of Season 48.

A powerful moment between two “Survivor” contestants on rival tribes brought Jeff Probst to tears, which he said has “never happened” in his 25 years of hosting the show.
Eva Erickson, 24, who has autism, was “extremely overwhelmed” during the March 26 episode of Season 48, which led to her crying uncontrollably as her four tribe mates tried to console her.
Probst noticed a competitor from a rival tribe, Joe Hunter, 45, showing concern for Erickson in the emotional moment. Hunter and Erickson started the game on the same tribe but were separated in Episode 4. Usually contestants from competing tribes are not allowed to physically interact, but Probst broke with protocol.
“Joe, you want to give her a hug?” he asked Hunter in the episode.
Hunter walked over and embraced Erickson, telling her, “You’re good. Deep breath, remember.”
He took Erickson’s hand and continued to calm her. She thanked him, and then he asked if she wanted another “big hug.”
“Yeah, you’re amazing,” she replied.
“Ease you out of it,” he said as he embraced her. “Come back down out of it. Easy, slow your breath.”
He then clasped her hands as she stopped crying and once again thanked him.
Erickson had only told Hunter early in the competition that she had autism, but then shared it with the group after their moment together. Probst spoke about why he allowed Hunter to break with the usual rules of no contact with an opposing tribe.
“Normally, when a challenge ends, we keep the tribes separated, but I think everybody here saw that something really powerful was happening,” Probst said. “Eva was struggling, emotionally struggling. Clearly there was a connection with a former tribe mate in Joe. I felt it was OK for me to suggest they hug, and I could see everybody agreed.”
Probst then asked Hunter why he would risk potentially losing the “Survivor” competition by helping someone from a rival tribe.
“I want my kids watching me,” the fire captain from California said. “I’m going to be the man I want them to be and the people I want them to be, regardless of the game, and that’s what you do. That’s who I am. So if it exposes, it exposes, but she was in need, and I would want someone to treat my daughter that way if they were playing this game.”
Erickson then told the other competitors that she was diagnosed with autism when she was very young.
“I’ve never viewed my autism as a roadblock to success,” she said. “It’s not something to work around, it’s just part of who I am. It’s nothing bad about it.”
Her fellow “Survivor” players clapped in the background as Erickson told her story.
“Please let’s take a step away from the game and understand that this is something that I deal with with my autism, and everyone who has autism should not be ashamed to ask for help and ashamed to receive it,” she said.
Probst then became emotional as he summed up the moment.
“Eva, it takes so much courage to play ‘Survivor’ for anybody, but for you to come out here knowing something like this might happen, and then be brave enough to share your story,” he said.
“Because there is a young girl or boy just like you watching right now going, ‘Hey Mom, hey Dad...”
Probst paused as he fought back tears.
“Now you got me. I’m a parent, too, and I do see it. Wow, this has never happened. But I see it, too, and it’s why I love ‘Survivor.’”
Erickson told People in an interview that it was “crazy seeing Jeff cry.”
“Seeing Jeff get so emotional about the situation and thinking about his own family and his kids, that was the moment when it hit me, that this is a moment that is going to be remembered,” she said. “He’s seen so many people and been through so much through all of years of ‘Survivor,’ and now seeing that this moment broke him, I was like, OK, this is bigger than I can imagine.”
On the show, Erickson described experiencing “episodes” where she gets extremely overstimulated and “ungrounded,” which causes her to “lose control” of herself.
The Ph.D. candidate from Brown University told People she kept falling during a challenge, which caused her to become overwhelmed. She was grateful for Hunter stepping in to help calm her.
“I want to tell Joe that he’s my superhero,” she told People. “He is an amazing man, and I am so thankful I got to meet him through ‘Survivor,’ and that this is someone who, regardless of what happens in the rest of the game, he will always have a place in my heart. He saw me in this hard situation — and he had the tools and knew what to do — and he acted on that."

Trump expected to announce new auto tariffs this afternoon

The president had previously indicated he was receptive to pleas from U.S. automakers that tariffs would harm their businesses.

President Donald Trump is expected to announce new measures imposing tariffs on automobiles Wednesday afternoon.

It was not immediately clear what the scope of the new duties would be. The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that they may only end up affecting "finished" vehicles while leaving out auto parts. NBC News could not immediately verify that report.

Shares in the U.S.'s largest automakers initially fell on news of the announcement, which came directly from White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, but rallied after the Journal published its report.

Mexico remains the largest source of U.S. auto imports, accounting for approximately 14% of all cars purchased in the U.S., followed by Japan, South Korea, the European Union and Canada.

The announcement comes a week ahead of Trump's planned "Liberation Day" on April 2, when he has promised to roll out a bevy of new tariffs against many of America's largest trading partners, including long-time allies, that will affect a broad range of goods. Trump had hinted in recent days that a separate statement on auto tariffs could come ahead of next week.

Previously, Trump indicated he was receptive to pleas from U.S. automakers that tariffs would harm their businesses. He gave them a one-month reprieve from duties on Canada and Mexico that ultimately evolved into indefinitely waiving the levies for all items covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada free-trade agreement.

Trump's on-again, off-again announcements have roiled markets in recent weeks while ratcheting up uncertainty in the economy. That has led to declining business and consumer confidence.

While some economic indicators have suggested the U.S. economy remains in solid shape, the U.S. Commerce Department reported Tuesday that orders for business equipment placed with U.S. factories unexpectedly declined 0.3% last month, the first drop since October.

Meanwhile, S&P Global reported this week that U.S. manufacturing activity slipped back into contraction territory thanks to a rise in materials costs related to tariffs, while the outlook for the services sector deteriorated.

Democrats are urging the U.S. Justice Department to investigate discussions of war plans on Signal.

On March 26, 2025, Democratic U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, along with leading Senate Democrats, sent a letter to former Republican President Donald Trump and his senior officials. They called for a U.S. Justice Department investigation into the accidental inclusion of a journalist in a confidential discussion about sensitive military plans.

Trump administration officials have claimed no classified material was shared in the group chat on Signal, an encrypted commercial messaging app.

Democratic senators voiced skepticism, noting that the journalist, Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg, reported that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted operational details about pending strikes against Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis, "including information about targets, weapons the U.S. would be deploying, and attack sequencing."
"We write to you with extreme alarm about the astonishingly poor judgment shown by your Cabinet and national security advisors," the Democratic Senators wrote in Wednesday's letter.
"Moreover, given that willful or negligent disclosure of classified or sensitive national security information may constitute a criminal violation of the Espionage Act or other laws, we expect Attorney General Bondi to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation of the conduct of the government officials involved in improperly sharing or discussing such information," the letter added.
Trump said his administration would look into the use of Signal but voiced support for his national security team when questioned about the incident at a White House event on Tuesday with Michael Waltz, his national security adviser.
Trump said he did not think Waltz should apologize, but said he did not think Waltz and the team would be using Signal again soon.
Waltz, in an interview with "The Ingraham Angle" on Fox News on Tuesday, said: "I take full responsibility" for the breach, as he had created the Signal group, but he emphasized there was no classified information shared.
Waltz said the situation was "embarrassing" and that the administration would "get to the bottom" of what went wrong. He said Goldberg's number was not saved in his phone and he does not know how the journalist was mistakenly added to the chat group.

  • Full Story

  • The FBI stepped up its efforts to investigate attacks against Tesla by launching a new task force.

FBI Director Kash Patel called the attacks “domestic terrorism,” Monday, March 24 on X.

“Those responsible will be pursued, caught, and brought to justice,” Patel wrote.

How widespread are the attacks?

The move comes as the agency has been working to crack down on attacks on Tesla cars, charging stations and showrooms amid controversy over CEO Elon Musk’s leadership at the Department of Government Efficiency.

The incidents have happened in at least nine states.
On Monday, March 24, a bomb squad found multiple incendiary devices at a Tesla showroom in Austin, Texas, home of the company’s global headquarters.
Ben Williamson, the FBI’s assistant director for public affairs, said the new task force would work with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

How will the new task force operate?

It’s not clear how the force differs from the current work the FBI and ATF are doing to assist law enforcement.
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced charges on Thursday, March 20, against three individuals responsible for the destruction of Tesla properties. They all face up to 20 years in prison.
She also recently sent a stark warning to vandals.
“If you’re gonna touch a Tesla, go to a dealership, do anything, you better watch out because we’re coming after you,” Bondi said.
Musk criticized the attacks on X.
“This level of violence is insane and deeply wrong,” Musk said. “Tesla just makes electric cars and has done nothing to deserve these evil attacks.”
A group called “Tesla Takedown” called for protests on Saturday, March 29 outside of the nearly 300 Tesla showrooms in the United States.
The group stated on its Global Day of Action webpage, “Elon Musk is destroying our democracy, and he’s using the fortune he built at Tesla to do it.”
Organizers emphasized it’s a “peaceful protest movement” and they oppose violence, vandalism and destruction.
The FBI also recently warned the public to be on high alert near Tesla dealerships and called on citizens to report any violence to the authorities immediately.

Hello,

Coinbase was identified as one of the primary victims of a supply chain attack affecting GitHub Actions, where the Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) credentials of 218 repositories were exposed.

The supply chain attack linked to the GitHub Action "tj-actions/changed-files" initially began as a focused strike on one of Coinbase's open-source projects, but it eventually expanded, affecting a larger number of targets.

"The payload was focused on exploiting the public CI/CD flow of one of their open source projects – agentkit, probably with the purpose of leveraging it for further compromises," Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 said in a report. "However, the attacker was not able to use Coinbase secrets or publish packages."

The incident came to light on March 14, 2025, when it was found that "tj-actions/changed-files" was compromised to inject code that leaked sensitive secrets from repositories that ran the workflow. It has been assigned the CVE identifier CVE-2025-30066 (CVSS score: 8.6).

According to Endor Labs, 218 GitHub repositories are estimated to have exposed their secrets due to the supply chain attack, and a majority of the leaked information includes a "few dozen" credentials for DockerHub, npm, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), as well as GitHub install access tokens.

"The initial scale of the supply chain attack sounded scary, considering that tens of thousands of repositories depend on the GitHub Action," security researcher Henrik Plate said.

"However, drilling down into the workflows, their runs and leaked secrets shows that the actual impact is smaller than anticipated: 'Only' 218 repositories leaked secrets, and the majority of those are short-lived GITHUB_TOKENs, which expire once a workflow run is completed."

Since then, it has emerged that the v1 tag of another GitHub Action called "reviewdog/action-setup," which "tj-actions/changed-files" relies on as a dependency via "tj-actions/eslint-changed-files," was also compromised in the lead up to the tj-actions incident with a similar payload. The breach of "reviewdog/action-setup" is being tracked as CVE-2025-30154 (CVSS score: 8.6).

The exploitation of CVE-2025-30154 is said to have enabled the unidentified threat actor to obtain a personal access token (PAT) associated with "tj-actions/changed-files," thereby allowing them to modify the repository and push the malicious code, in turn impacting every single GitHub repository that depended on the action.

"When the tj-actions/eslint-changed-files action was executed, the tj-actions/changed-files CI runner's secrets were leaked, allowing the attackers to steal the credentials used in the runner, including a Personal Access Token (PAT) belonging to the tj-bot-actions GitHub user account," Unit 42 researchers Omer Gil, Aviad Hahami, Asi Greenholts, and Yaron Avital said.

It's currently suspected that the attacker managed to somehow gain access to a token with write access to the reviewdog organization in order to make the rogue alterations. That said, the manner in which this token may have been acquired remains unknown at this stage.

Furthermore, the malicious commits to "reviewdog/action-setup" is said to have been carried out by first forking the corresponding repository, committing changes to it, and then creating a fork pull request to the original repository and ultimately introducing arbitrary commits – a scenario called a dangling commit.

The attacker employed advanced methods to hide their actions, including using dangling commits, creating several temporary GitHub user accounts, and masking their activities in workflow logs, particularly during the initial Coinbase attack," explained Gil, Senior Research Manager at Palo Alto Networks, in an interview with The Hacker News. "These findings suggest that the attacker possesses significant expertise and a deep understanding of CI/CD security vulnerabilities and attack strategies.

Unit 42 theorized that the user account behind the fork pull request "iLrmKCu86tjwp8" may have been hidden from public view after the attacker switched from a legitimate email address provided during registration to a disposable (or anonymous) email in violation of GitHub's policy.

This could have caused all the interactions and actions performed by the user to be concealed. However, when reached for comment, GitHub did not confirm or deny the hypothesis, but said it's actively reviewing the situation and taking action as necessary.

"There is currently no evidence to suggest a compromise of GitHub or its systems. The projects highlighted are user-maintained open-source projects," a GitHub spokesperson told The Hacker News.

"GitHub continues to review and take action on user reports related to repository contents, including malware and other malicious attacks, in accordance with GitHub's Acceptable Use Policies. Users should always review GitHub Actions or any other package that they are using in their code before they update to new versions. That remains true here as in all other instances of using third party code."

A deeper search for GitHub forks of tj-actions/changed-files has led to the discovery of two other accounts "2ft2dKo28UazTZ" and "mmvojwip," both of which have since been deleted from the platform. Both the accounts have also been found to create forks of Coinbase-related repositories such as onchainkit, agentkit, and x402.

Further examination has uncovered that the accounts modified the "changelog.yml" file in the agentkit repository using a fork pull request to point to a malicious version of "tj-actions/changed-files" published earlier using the PAT.

The attacker is believed to have obtained a GitHub token with write permissions to the agentkit repository – in turn facilitated by the execution of the tj-actions/changed-files GitHub Actions – so as to make the unauthorized changes.

Another important aspect worth highlighting is the difference in payloads used in both the cases, indicating attempts on part of the attacker to stay under the radar.

"The attacker used different payloads at different stages of the attack. For example, in the widespread attack, the attacker dumped the runner's memory and printed secrets stored as environment variables to the workflow's log, regardless of which workflow was running," Gil said.

"However, when targeting Coinbase, the attacker specifically fetched the GITHUB_TOKEN and ensured that the payload would only execute if the repository belonged to Coinbase."

It's currently not known what the end goal of the campaign was, it's "strongly" suspected that the intent was financial gain, likely attempting to conduct cryptocurrency theft, given the hyper-specific targeting of Coinbase, Gil pointed out. As of March 19, 2025, the cryptocurrency exchange has remediated the attack.

It's also not clear what prompted the attacker to switch gears, turning what was an initially targeted attack turned into a large-scale and less stealthy campaign.

"One hypothesis is that after realizing they could not leverage their token to poison the Coinbase repository -- and upon learning that Coinbase had detected and mitigated the attack - the attacker feared losing access to the tj-actions/changed-files action," Gil said.

"Given that compromising this action could grant access to numerous other projects, the attacker likely opted for swift action. This could account for why the widespread attack was launched just 20 minutes after Coinbase addressed the exposure on their side, despite the heightened risk of detection."
