বাংলাদেশের রাজনীতিতে উত্তেজনা বৃদ্ধি, প্রধান দলগুলোর মধ্যে সংঘর্ষের আশঙ্কা

বাংলাদেশে নিবন্ধিত রাজনৈতিক দল মোট ৪৯টি। এরই মধ্যে গত আট মাসে দেশে ২৬টি রাজনৈতিক দল ও প্ল্যাটফর্ম আত্মপ্রকাশ করেছে। এর মধ্যে রাজনৈতিক দল ২২টি ও প্ল্যাটফর্ম ৪টি।

গণঅভ্যুত্থানের জেরে গত বছরের ৫ আগস্ট আওয়ামী লীগ সরকারের পতনের পর থেকে এসব রাজনৈতিক দল বা প্ল্যাটফর্ম আত্মপ্রকাশ করেছে। অভ্যুত্থানে নেতৃত্ব দেয়া শিক্ষার্থীদের দল এনসিপি ছাড়াও এই কয় মাসে গণমাধ্যমে আসা রাজনৈতিক দল ও প্ল্যাটফর্মের সংখ্যা দুই ডজনেরও বেশি।

এরই ধারাবাহিকতায় দেশের রাজনৈতিক অঙ্গনে যুক্ত হয়েছে জনতা পার্টি বাংলাদেশ নামে আরও একটি রাজনৈতিক দল।

শুক্রবার, (২৫ এপ্রিল) চিত্রনায়ক ও নিরাপদ সড়ক আন্দোলনে নিয়ে কাজ করা ইলিয়াস কাঞ্চনের নেতৃত্বে আত্মপ্রকাশ করলো ‘জনতার পার্টি বাংলাদেশ’ দলটি। এই দলের চেয়ারম্যান ইলিয়াস কাঞ্চন এবং মহাসচিব হয়েছেন সাংবাদিক শওকত মাহমুদ।

তবে এত কম সময়ে এতগুলো দলের আত্মপ্রকাশ নিয়ে স্বাভাবিকভাবেই প্রশ্ন উঠছে। সাধারণ মহলেও যেমন চলছে নানা ধরনের গল্প, তেমনি রাজনৈতিক বিশ্লেষকদের মধ্যেও চলছে দলগুলো নিয়ে বিচার-বিশ্লেষণ। বিশ্লেষকরা বলছেন, দল গঠনের এই প্রবণতা নতুন কিছু নয়। এর আগেও বিভিন্ন সময়ে এমন নতুন নতুন দল গঠন করতে দেখা গেছে।

আর নির্বাচনকেই এর প্রধান কারণ হিসেবে দেখছেন তারা। বলছেন, নির্বাচনের সময় এগুলো ‘ব্যাঙের ছাতার মতো এমন অনেক দল গজিয়ে ওঠে’। তবে নতুন নতুন রাজনৈতিক দলের আত্মপ্রকাশকে আপাতদৃষ্টিতে গণতান্ত্রিক চর্চার সঙ্গে যুক্ত করা হলেও বাংলাদেশের প্রেক্ষাপটে অনেকক্ষেত্রেই তা স্বার্থ ও ক্ষমতাচর্চার একটি রূপ বলেই মত

বিশ্লেষকদের। একইসঙ্গে ভোটের সময় জোট-রাজনীতিও এই প্রবণতা বৃদ্ধির ক্ষেত্রে প্রভাব রাখে বলেও মনে করেন অনেকে।

গত ১৭ এপ্রিল আত্মপ্রকাশ করেছে বাংলাদেশ আ-আম জনতা পার্টি, যার প্রধান ডেসটিনির মোহাম্মদ রফিকুল আমীন। অর্থ পাচার ও ডেসটিনি ট্রি প্লান্টেশনের মামলায় ১২ বছর কারাভোগের পর গত ১৫ জানুয়ারি জেল থেকে বের হওয়ার তিন মাসের মাথায় নতুন এই দল নিয়ে হাজির হন তিনি।

কিন্তু ব্যবসায়ী হিসেবে পরিচিত আমীনের হঠাৎ রাজনীতিতে নাম লেখানোর কারণ কী? বিবিসির এক রিপোর্টে এই প্রশ্নের জবাবে তিনি জানান, রাজনৈতিক পরিচয় না থাকার কারণে ক্ষমতাচ্যুত সাবেক প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা দেশ ছেড়ে পালানোর পর অন্য অনেকে জেল থেকে ছাড়া পেলেও তিনি তা পাননি।

আমীন জানান, এই রাজনৈতিক মঞ্চকে মাধ্যম হিসেবে ব্যবহার করে তিনি তার ‘জুলুমের কথা তখন যে প্রশাসক থাকবে, যে রাষ্ট্রশাসন করবে তার কাছে’ পৌঁছাবেন।

মাসে গড়ে তিনটি করে রাজনৈতিক দল ও সংগঠন

২০২৪ সালের আগস্ট থেকে ২০২৫-এর ২৫ এপ্রিল পর্যন্ত অন্তত ২২টি রাজনৈতিক দল ও ও চারটি রাজনৈতিক প্ল্যাটফর্ম আত্মপ্রকাশের খবর এসেছে গণমাধ্যমে।

যার মধ্যে গত বছর ১১টি আর চলতি বছরের প্রথম চার মাসে আরও ১১টি দল গঠিত হয়েছে। সেই হিসেবে প্রতি মাসে গড়ে তিনটি করে রাজনৈতিক দল ও সংগঠন হয়েছে।

আত্মপ্রকাশ করা দলগুলোর মধ্যে আছে, নিউক্লিয়াস পার্টি অব বাংলাদেশ (এনপিবি), জাতীয়তাবাদী গণতান্ত্রিক পার্টি, ওয়ার্ল্ড মুসলিম কমিউনিটি, সমতা পার্টি, বাংলাদেশ জনপ্রিয় পার্টি (বিপিপি), সার্বভৌমত্ব আন্দোলন, বাংলাদেশ সংস্কারবাদী পার্টি (বিআরপি), বাংলাদেশ মুক্তির ডাক ৭১, বাংলাদেশ জাগ্রত পার্টি, বাংলাদেশ গণতান্ত্রিক পার্টি (বিজিপি), জাতীয় বিপ্লবী পরিষদ, দেশ জনতা পার্টি, আমজনতার দল, বাংলাদেশ গণতান্ত্রিক শক্তি, বাংলাদেশ সোশ্যাল ডেমোক্র্যাটিক পার্টি (বিএসডিপি), বাংলাদেশ জন-অধিকার পার্টি, জাতীয় নাগরিক পার্টি, জনতার বাংলাদেশ পার্টি, জনতার দল, গণতান্ত্রিক নাগরিক শক্তি, ভাসানী জনশক্তি পার্টি ও আ-আম জনতা পার্টি (বিএজেপি)।

রাজনীতিতে আসা নতুন দলগুলোর মধ্যে সবচেয়ে বেশি গুরুত্ব নিয়ে আলোচনায় রয়েছে এনসিপি। দলটি এখনও নিবন্ধন পায়নি।

বৈষম্যবিরোধী ছাত্র আন্দোলন ও জাতীয় নাগরিক কমিটি নামক যে রাজনৈতিক প্ল্যাটফর্ম থেকে দলটি তৈরি হয়েছে, সেগুলোও বর্তমানে সচল আছে।

রাজনৈতিক দলের পাশাপাশি প্ল্যাটফর্মগুলো থেকে নতুন ছাত্র সংগঠন ‘বাংলাদেশ গণতান্ত্রিক ছাত্র সংসদ’ তৈরি হয়েছে। এছাড়াও এনসিপি’র গঠন থেকে বেরিয়ে আসা শিবিরের সাবেক নেতাদের নতুন সংগঠন ‘ইউনাইটেড পিপলস বাংলাদেশ’ এরও এই মাসের মধ্যেই আত্মপ্রকাশের কথা রয়েছে।

নতুন নতুন এসব দল আর প্ল্যাটফর্ম সম্পর্কে সাধারণ মানুষ কতটা জানে? ঢাকার রাস্তায় চলাচলকারী ভ্যানচালক মো. হারুন বলেন, ‘বাংলাদেশে মনে করেন ১০ জনেও দল করা যায়। যার যার মতো খালি দল বানাইতাছে আর করতাছে। এগিলির কোনো ইস্টিমেট আছে? এগিলা দল আমরা ভ্যান গাড়িয়ালারাও বানাইতে পারি।’

নতুন দলগুলোর নাম শোনা হয়েছে কিনা প্রশ্নের জবাবে চাকরিজীবী সালমা আক্তার বলেন, ‘আমি আমজনতা বলে বাংলাদেশের সবাইকেই বুঝি। কিন্তু এটা আবার দল? জানি না।’

মূলত ভোটের সময় জোট-রাজনীতির সঙ্গে এই প্রবণতার সংযোগ রয়েছে মনে করছেন বিশ্লেষকরা। বিশেষ করে নির্বাচন এগিয়ে এলে এই ধরনের দল গঠনের তোড়জোড় দেখা যায়।

এ নিয়ে রাজনৈতিক বিশ্লেষক মহিউদ্দিন আহমদ বলেন, ‘এর আগেও আমরা দেখেছি যখন নির্বাচনের গন্ধ এসে নাকে লাগে, তখন হঠাৎ করেই এমন অনেক দল গজিয়ে ওঠে ব্যাঙের ছাতার মতো।’ এ ধরনের দল তৈরির প্রবণতা দেখা গিয়েছিল এরশাদের আমলেও, যুক্ত করেন এই বিশ্লেষক। সেসময় ১২০টার বেশি দল গঠন হয়েছিল। পরবর্তী সময়ে ৯০টা দল নিয়ে জোট করার নজির আছে উল্লেখ করে ‘এরা জাস্ট সংখ্যা’ বলে মন্তব্য করেন তিনি।

বাংলাদেশের রাজনৈতিক অঙ্গনে গত কয়েকদিন ধরে উত্তেজনা বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে। বিএনপি ও আওয়ামী লীগের নেতাকর্মীদের মধ্যে সংঘর্ষের ঘটনা ঘটেছে, যা দেশের বিভিন্ন স্থানে সহিংসতার আশঙ্কা তৈরি করেছে। রাজনৈতিক বিশ্লেষকরা বলছেন, এই পরিস্থিতি দেশের গণতান্ত্রিক প্রক্রিয়ার জন্য হুমকি স্বরূপ।​

রাজধানী ঢাকাসহ দেশের বিভিন্ন অঞ্চলে বিরোধী দল বিএনপির সমর্থকরা বিক্ষোভ মিছিল করেছে, যার মধ্যে পুলিশের সঙ্গে তাদের সংঘর্ষের ঘটনা ঘটে। অন্যদিকে, ruling আওয়ামী লীগ তাদের সমর্থকদের নিয়ে পাল্টা মিছিল বের করেছে, যা পরিস্থিতিকে আরও উত্তপ্ত করেছে।​

রাজনৈতিক বিশ্লেষকরা মনে করছেন, এই উত্তেজনা দেশের রাজনৈতিক স্থিতিশীলতা ও গণতান্ত্রিক প্রক্রিয়ার জন্য বিপজ্জনক হতে পারে। তারা সরকারের প্রতি আহ্বান জানিয়েছেন, বিরোধী দলের সঙ্গে সংলাপের মাধ্যমে পরিস্থিতি শান্ত করার জন্য।​

এদিকে, জাতিসংঘ ও আন্তর্জাতিক সম্প্রদায় বাংলাদেশের রাজনৈতিক পরিস্থিতি নিয়ে গভীর উদ্বেগ প্রকাশ করেছে। তারা সকল পক্ষকে সহিংসতা পরিহার করে সংলাপের মাধ্যমে সমাধান খুঁজে বের করার আহ্বান জানিয়েছে।​

রাজনৈতিক অস্থিরতা ও সহিংসতার এই পরিস্থিতিতে দেশের সাধারণ জনগণ উদ্বেগের মধ্যে রয়েছে। তারা আশা করছেন, রাজনৈতিক দলগুলো তাদের পার্থক্য ভুলে দেশের স্বার্থে একত্রিত হয়ে শান্তিপূর্ণ সমাধানে পৌঁছাবে।

Israeli Airstrikes Kill Over 60 in Gaza as Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

Israeli airstrikes have intensified in the Gaza Strip, resulting in at least 60 fatalities, including entire families, and exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation. The United Nations reports that the region has been under a complete blockade for eight weeks, marking the longest border closure in Gaza's history.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that it has depleted all its food stocks in Gaza, leaving approximately 1.1 million people facing catastrophic food insecurity. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has classified the entire Gaza Strip in IPC Phase 5 (Catastrophe), with nearly half of the population experiencing acute food insecurity. ​

The situation is further compounded by a lack of access to clean water, medicine, and fuel, leading to widespread malnutrition and disease outbreaks. International humanitarian organizations are calling for an immediate ceasefire and unrestricted access to deliver aid to the affected population.

The international community remains divided on the issue, with some countries condemning the Israeli actions and others supporting Israel's right to self-defense. Diplomatic efforts continue, but a resolution to the crisis remains elusive.

The Israeli military claims it is targeting Hamas infrastructure, but the majority of casualties continue to be civilians, including women and children. Entire residential blocks have been flattened, and hospitals are struggling to function without electricity or medical supplies. The humanitarian aid convoys waiting at the Rafah border remain blocked, while desperation grows inside Gaza. Reports of children dying from dehydration and lack of baby formula are becoming more frequent. The psychological toll on survivors, especially young children, is immeasurable. Bezos-backed Slate Auto unveils affordable EV truck

 One outlet has called it the "anti-Tesla," referring to its simple, minimalist stature.

Slate Auto, a firm backed in part by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is unveiling a low-cost electric truck that can also change into an SUV.

Its starting price point: $20,000 after federal EV incentives.

"A radically simple electric pickup truck that can change into whatever you need it to be — even an SUV," the Slate Auto website says. "Made in the USA at a price that’s actually affordable (no really, for real)."

The two-door version can be changed into a 5-seat SUV. The baseline truck is small: About two-thirds the size of a Chevy Silverado EV and about seven-eights the size of a Ford Maverick. It has a payload capacity of 1,400 pounds compared the Maverick's 1500 pounds.

At less than 15 feet long, Slate says its more akin to a 1985 Toyota pickup.

Its smaller and less gaudy stature are by design: TechCrunch refers to the Slate as an "anti-Tesla," and while both the Slate Truck and the Cybertruck are customizable, the starting Slate model is stripped down to essential elements, including no power windows or infotainment screen.

The specs show a maximum range of 150 miles on a single charge, with the option for a longer-range battery pack that could offer up to 240 miles. The vehicles are designed in California and Michigan, engineered in Michigan, and assembled somewhere in the Midwest, according to Slate's website. TechCrunch reported the plant is in Indiana.  

Earlier this month, TechCrunch broke the news that Bezos, along with the controlling owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Mark Walter; and a third investor, Thomas Tull, had helped Slate raise $111 million for the project. A document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission listed Melinda Lewison, the head of Bezos' family office, as a Slate Auto director.

The vehicles aren't expected to be delivered to customers until late 2026, but can be reserved for a refundable $50 fee.

Markets jump after Trump softens rhetoric on China and Fed chair

 Investors also took heart that Elon Musk was stepping back from his White House role to refocus on Tesla.

U.S. stocks opened higher Wednesday after President Donald Trump signaled a softer stance toward the eye-watering tariffs he had set for China, while also stating he would not make an immediate change in leadership at the Federal Reserve.

Investors were also cheered by Elon Musk's imminent return to a more full-time focus on Tesla, dialing back his controversial stint as a Trump White House adviser to one to two days a week.

The S&P 500 climbed as much as 3.2% in early-morning trading. The tech-focused Nasdaq surged 4.1%. Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1,000 points or about 2.7%.

Investors also increased demand in U.S. government bonds, lowering borrowing costs — an explicit goal of the Trump administration.

Trump told reporters Tuesday evening that the China tariffs, which on paper have reached as high as 145%, would "come down substantially" as he looked to secure a trade deal.

Those remarks came after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told a group of investors earlier in the day that the administration was looking toward “de-escalation” with China. “No one thinks the current status quo is sustainable,” he said according to CNBC, which cited a person present at the investor gathering hosted by JP Morgan.

Trump also said Tuesday he had "no intention" of firing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, despite calling him a "major loser" and "Mr. Too Late" the day before — a reference to what Trump perceives as dawdling in lowering interest rates.

Economists had warned that any threat to the central bank's independence would upend global markets and cause U.S. borrowing rates to surge.

With Wednesday's gains, stocks will have climbed about 8% over the past week and a half.

Yet they remain about 13% off of the highs seen in January, just after Trump's inauguration. Markets remain bruised — perhaps indefinitely so — by Trump's erratic policymaking.

Trump changes-of-mind have been a constant of his second term, and there was nothing to suggest that the latest evolution of his thinking would be final.

“With investor concerns growing, U.S. President Trump demonstrated the art of the retreat," Paul Donovan, chief economist of UBS Global Wealth Management, said in a note to clients.

He continued: "Nonetheless, the erratic threaten-retreat-threaten-retreat cycle has economic consequences. The uncertainty this causes may impact consumer and business decision-making.”

Some commentators believe a more lasting shift by foreign investors away from holding U.S. assets has already begun.

"The U.S. faces a coming adjustment to a lower pace of foreign capital inflows to US asset markets," Bob Elliott, co-founder, CEO and chief investment officer at the Unlimited Funds asset management group, said in a post on X Wednesday.

Meanwhile, tech stocks were poised to get a significant boost from comments by Musk, the CEO of the electric carmaker Tesla, during the company's first-quarter earnings report to investors Tuesday afternoon.

While the company said profits had shrunk dramatically in the first-three months of the year, Musk said he was actively winding down his role advising the Department of Government Efficiency, the quasi-official Trump project that has upended the federal workforce.

Before the market open at 9:30 a.m., Tesla shares were up as much as 7%.

"Musk made a huge move forward as his time in DOGE/White House now winds down and he will be laser focused on Tesla again," Dan Ives, managing director at Wedbush Securities, said on X Wednesday. "Musk finally read the room and made a pivot which helps remove the black cloud over Tesla. New chapter begins."

Ives said his new long-term price target for Tesla's stock was $350; as of Tuesday, the stock had closed at about $238, implying a 47% gain.

Others remained cautious that Tesla could recover in a short amount of time from the 50% drop its share price has seen over the past several months. On the earnings call with investors, Musk said the company was still on track to roll out commercially viable robotaxis, humanoid robots and full-self-driving capabilities.

"We remind investors that TSLA has historically delivered stunning technical achievements, but often delivered later than initially promised," analysts with the Truist financial group said in a note to clients. "We maintain an open mind.

Federal government appeals judge's order to move detained Tufts student Rumeysa Öztürk to Vermont

 The student is facing deportation after writing an essay about Israel and the war in Gaza.

The federal government is fighting a judge’s ruling that Tufts University student Rümeysa Öztürk, who wrote an essay about Israel and the war in Gaza and is fighting deportation, must be transferred back to an immigration facility in Vermont from Louisiana. 

The Department of Justice on Tuesday filed an appeal of the judge's order.

U.S. District Judge William K. Sessions III ruled Friday that Öztürk, who is being held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody in Louisiana, must be transferred to Vermont, where her habeas corpus petition was filed.

She would be allowed to remain there as the petition, which challenges her detainment, plays out in court. The ruling also removes her case in Louisiana immigration court. 

Sessions gave the government four days to respond.

Department of Homeland Security agents grabbed Öztürk, a doctoral student who was in the United States on a student visa, off the street in late March. DHS accused her of engaging “in activities in support of Hamas.”  

Last year, Öztürk co-wrote an op-ed in the Tufts student newspaper that called on the school to “acknowledge the Palestinian genocide” and divest from companies with ties to Israel. The school said in a statement that the essay did not violate its policies. 

Öztürk was moved to three separate locations, including Vermont, before she ended up in Louisiana, despite an order from a district court that said she could not be moved out of Massachusetts without notice. 

“For nearly 24 hours, Ms. Öztürk’s attorney was unable to locate her,” the American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing her in part, said in a news release. “More than 16 hours after a federal court ordered that Ms. Öztürk not be moved out of Massachusetts in order to ‘preserve the status quo,’ her counsel was kept in the dark about Ms. Öztürk’s whereabouts.”

Court documents show that ICE officials said she was transferred there because “there was no available bedspace” in the New England facilities.  

Immigration advocates and experts say that facilities in rural Louisiana have been the subject of major human rights criticisms and that the Trump administration has sent students to a jurisdiction that is aligned with its immigration goals. 

The detentions of Öztürk and other student activists across the country have prompted widespread criticism of the federal government and its role in protecting free speech.

On Tuesday, a congressional delegation led by Rep. Troy Carter, D-La., visited the ICE facilities in Louisiana. The members met with Öztürk and Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil, a pro-Palestinian activist and green-card holder, whom ICE arrested and detained in early March. 

Öztürk and Khalil are among the hundreds of international students whose visas the Trump administration has revoked as it takes aim at scholars who participate in political activism, among other factors. 

“It might be more than 300 at this point. We do it every day. Every time I find one of these lunatics, I take away their visas,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at a news conference last month.

Helicopter in Hudson River crash lacked flight recorders, officials sa

As crews continued to search for parts in the Hudson River, Sen. Chuck Schumer called for more regulation of helicopter tours.

As crews continue to search for key parts of the helicopter that crashed into the Hudson River, they won’t find one piece of evidence that is usually critical to investigators.

“The helicopter was not equipped with any flight recorders. No onboard video recorders or camera recorders have been recovered and none of the helicopter avionics onboard recorded information that could be used for the investigation,” the National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement Saturday.

Thursday’s deadly accident claimed the lives of a family of five visiting from Spain and the pilot.

“Divers from the New York Police Department are continuing to search for the helicopter’s main rotor, main gear box, tail rotor and a large portion of the tail boom. Side-scanning sonar is being used to identify potential locations of wreckage,” the NTSB’s statement said.

According to officials, the last major inspection of the helicopter was on March 1, and before the crash it completed seven tour flights.

Now, lawmakers are calling on federal agencies to increase regulations and protocols for these types of helicopter tours.

“The company has an operating certificate from the [Federal Aviation Administration] that is called a ‘Part 91.’ It does not require the entire team of people who oversee or fly the helicopter to have the level of training and experience that commercial and passenger helicopter companies have to have,” Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday at a press conference.

He spoke at the Wall Street Heliport in Manhattan, where New York Helicopter Tours launched the fatal Bell 206 L-4 flight on Thursday.

Officials say the pilot, Seankese Johnson, was a Navy veteran who earned his commercial pilot’s license in 2023 and logged over 800 hours of flight time as of March.

“Right now, New York Helicopter Tours is under federal investigation for these deaths. But first, I am urging the FAA to pull their operating certificate immediately and cease flights until their full investigation is concluded,” Schumer added.

New York Helicopter Tours said it is fully cooperating with the federal investigation.

The Democratic senator also called for increased federal regulations at all New York City-area helicopter tour companies — flights he described as “risky.”

“I’m also demanding that the FAA increase what are called ‘ramp inspections’ at other metro-area helicopter tour companies,” he added. “A ramp inspection is a surprise inspection. They show up unannounced and check if things are on the level and the helicopters are doing the right thing.”

Schumer’s stance contrasts sharply with that of Mayor Eric Adams, who voiced full support for tourism helicopters in New York City during an interview with Fox 5 on Friday, stating he would not add further regulations.

“That is part of the attraction of businesses being in the city, people coming to the city, seeing the city from the air. As part of the attraction, what we must do is make sure it’s safe, make sure it is done correctly,” Adams said.

Trump is in 'excellent health,' White House physician says

 The president’s annual exam Friday showed normal vital signs and neurological functioning; it also noted scarring on his ear from the assassination attempt at a rally last summer.

WASHINGTON — White House physician Sean Barbabella released a memo detailing the results of President Donald Trump’s annual physical on Friday, writing that the president is in “excellent health.”

Trump exhibits “robust cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and general physical function,” Barbabella wrote. “His active lifestyle continues to contribute significantly to his well-being.”

“President Trump’s days include participation in multiple meetings, public appearances, press availability, and frequent victories in golf events,” he continued. “President Trump exhibits excellent cognitive and physical health and is fully fit to execute the duties of the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State.”

The physical included diagnostic and laboratory testing, according to Barbabella’s memo. The physician also consulted with 14 specialty consultants, he added.

Barbabella noted in his diagnostic summary that Trump has scarring on his right hear from a gunshot wound, referring to the assassination attempt on the president in Butler, Pennsylvania, last summer.

The memo said Trump’s heart, lungs, eyes, hearing and abdominal exam results were all normal. His blood pressure was slightly elevated, at 128/74, and the dermatological exam revealed “some minor sun damage and a few benign lesions,” the memo said.

His routine lab work appeared to be within the normal ranges for blood count, kidney, liver and thyroid tests. Trump’s cholesterol appeared to be well controlled though medication, and his blood sugar is within normal limits.

The president also underwent “a comprehensive neurological examination,” which did not indicate any abnormalities, Barbabella wrote.

Trump completed the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, a common screening tool for cognitive impairment that typically takes about 10 minutes, achieving a normal result with a score of 30 out of 30, Barbabella said.

The president previously boasted about his score on that cognitive test, which is designed to assess mild cognitive impairment or early dementia.

“It’s like you’ll go: ‘Person, woman, man, camera, TV.’ So they say, ‘Could you repeat that?’ So I said, ‘Yeah. So it’s ‘person, woman, man, camera, TV.’ ‘OK, that’s very good. If you get it in order you get extra points,’” Trump said in 2020.

In November, Trump became the oldest person elected president. The record was previously held by Biden, whose age prompted concerns from voters.

The memo also indicated that Trump has lost 20 pounds since his last released physical in 2020. The memo said the president weighs 224 pounds with a body mass index of 28, putting him in the overweight category.

The president’s medicines listed in the memo include cholesterol medication and aspirin for heart disease prevention as well as a topical steroid cream as needed for his skin.

After just two weeks in theaters, “A Minecraft Movie” is already the highest grossing Hollywood release of 2025.

The Warner Bros. video game adaptation followed up its blockbuster opening with a second weekend of $80.6 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. Worldwide, it’s quickly surpassed $550 million.

After doubling expectations in its $300 million global debut, “A Minecraft Movie” continued to draw audiences unlike anything else this year. The film, directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, slid 50% in its second go-around in U.S. and Canadian theaters — an impressive hold after such a big debut.

Though critics slammed the movie (46% “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes) and audience scores were merely good (a “B+” CinemaScore), “A Minecraft Movie” latched on with moviegoers who have increasingly turned out in droves for big-budget videogame adaptations.

“A Minecraft Movie,” a $150 million co-production of Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, has helped -– at least for now -– reinvigorate theaters after a dismal start to the year. Overall ticket sales were double that of the same weekend in 2024, according to Comscore. Before “A Minecraft,” box office revenues trailed last year’s by 11%, but have now virtually pulled even. (2025 grosses still trail 2019’s by 31%, according to Comscore.)

None of the weekend’s new releases — Angel Studios’ “The King of Kings,” the Walt Disney Co.’s “The Amateur,” Universal Pictures’ “Drop” or A24’s “Warfare” — came close to challenging “Minecraft,” but several films outperformed expectations.

“The King of Kings,” an animated tale of Jesus’ life aimed at Christian audiences, came in second with $19.1 million in 3,200 theaters.

The film, loosely based on a children’s book by Charles Dickens, includes a starry voice cast led by Oscar Isaac, Kenneth Branagh and Uma Thurman.

With an enviable “A+” CinemaScore from audiences, “The King of Kings” is posed to capitalize in the coming week before Easter. Part three of Fathom Entertainment’s TV series, “The Chosen: Last Supper,” also looked to appeal to Christian audiences. It launched with $6.2 million from 2,296 cinemas.

“The Amateur,” a 20th Century production starring Rami Malek as a CIA cryptographer hunting down his wife’s killers, debuted with $15 million domestically, plus another $17.2 million overseas. Critics deemed the revenge thriller an awkward star vehicle for Malek, who also produced. “The Amateur” cost $60 million to make.

“Warfare,” director Alex Garland’s follow-up to 2024’s “Civil War,” opened with $8.3 million in ticket sales from 2,670 theaters.

Garland co-wrote and co-directed the A24 release with Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza, who based the film on 2006 mission he and his fellow Navy SEALs undertook during the war. “Warfare,” which cost about $20 million to make, was lauded by critics as an uncommonly realistic portrait of combat.

“Drop,” the latest thriller from Blumhouse Productions, debuted with $7.5 million from 3,085 theaters.

Christopher Landon’s film stars Meghann Fahy (“The White Lotus”) as a single-mom widow on a first date (Brandon Sklenar) who’s being terrorized by an unknown person by messages to her phone. “Drop,” which premiered at SXSW, cost less than $10 million to produce.

বগুড়ায় ওসির বিরুদ্ধে মামলা আপসে চাপ ও ঘুষ চাওয়ার অভিযোগ

বগুড়ার ধুনট থানার ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তার (ওসি) বিরুদ্ধে এক নারীকে মামলা আপসের জন্য চাপ দেওয়া ও ঘুষ চাওয়ার অভিযোগ এসেছে। 

এসব অভিযোগ আমলে নিয়ে স্বপ্রণোদিত হয়ে বিষয়টি আরও তদন্তের জন্য ধুনট উপজেলা নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তাকে আদেশ দিয়েছে ধুনট আমলী আদালত।

আজ দুপুরে এই আদেশ দেন বগুড়া ধুনট আমলী আদালতের বিচারক জুডিশিয়াল ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট মো. লোকমান হাকিম।

ধুনট আমলী আদালতের বেঞ্চ সহকারী মো. কামরুজ্জামান দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করেন।

তিনি জানান, সরেজমিনে ঘটনা তদন্ত করে আগামী ৩০ দিনের মধ্যে তদন্ত প্রতিবেদন বিচারকের কাছে জমা দেওয়ার নির্দেশ দেওয়া হয়েছে।  

আদালতের পর্যবেক্ষণে উল্লেখ করা হয়, একজন সাংবাদিকের ফেসবুক প্রোফাইলে ভুক্তভোগীর একটি ভিডিও দেখে ফৌজদারি কার্যবিধি, ১৮৯৮ এর ধারা ১৯০(১)(সি) অনুযায়ী বিচারক এই বিষয়ে স্বপ্রনোদিত হয়ে তদন্তের নির্দেশ দেন।

ভিডিওতে ধুনট উপজেলার বেলকুচি গ্রামের মোছা. তাসলিমা খাতুন নামের এক নারী ধুনট থানার ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা মো. সাইদুল আলমের বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ আনেন। তিনি জানান, ওসি সাইদুল আদালতে করা মামলাটি আপসের মাধ্যমে নিষ্পত্তির জন্য চাপ দেন।

পাশাপাশি পুলিশের ওই কর্মকর্তা মামলা আপসের খরচ বাবদ তার কাছে ঘুষ চেয়েছেন বলেও দাবি করেন তাসলিমা।

পুলিশ কর্মকর্তার বিরুদ্ধে তাসলিমার অপর অভিযোগ, তিনি ঘটনাস্থল থেকে উদ্ধারকৃত সিএনজি চালিত অটো-রিক্সাটি টাকার বিনিময়ে অভিযুক্তের কাছে হস্তান্তর করেছেন

এসব তথ্য আদালতের পর্যবেক্ষণে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে।

এ বিষয়ে তাসলিমা খাতুনের (৩২) সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করা হলে তিনি দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বলেন, 'আমার স্বামী একজন নেশাগ্রস্থ ব্যক্তি। প্রায় এক বছর আগে আমি আমার দুই ছেলে সন্তানকে নিয়ে বাবার বাড়ি চলে আসি। এর পর বগুড়া নারী ও শিশু নির্যাতন ট্রাইব্যুনাল ২ এ সন্তানের ভরণপোষণ দাবিতে মামলা করি। এর পর থেকে আমার স্বামী আমাকে এক লাখ টাকা নিয়ে তালাক দিতে বলে। তবে আমি এতে রাজি হইনি, কারণ বিয়েতে দেনমোহর ছিল আড়াই লাখ টাকা।'

'তিন মাস আগে একদিন আমার বাবার বাড়িতে সিএনজি নিয়ে এসে সন্তানদের নিয়ে যেতে চাইলে আমি বাধা দেই। এরপর সে আমাকে মারধর করার চেষ্টা করে। এ সময় গ্রামের মানুষ ছুটে আসলে সে পালিয়ে যায়।'

তাসলিমা জানান, পরবর্তীতে মারধরের অভিযোগ নিয়ে ধুনট থানায় গেলে ওসি মামলা নিয়ে আপোষের দিন ধার্য করে এবং আমার স্বামীর সিএনজিটি ঘটনাস্থল থেকে থানায় নিয়ে আসে।

তবে নির্ধারিত দিনে থানায় গিয়ে তিনি জানতে পারেন, টাকার বিনিময়ে সিএনজিটি তার স্বামীকে ফিরিয়ে দিয়েছেন ওই ওসি। 

'তারপর থেকে থানায় গেলে ওসি এক লাখ টাকার বিনিময়ে কোর্ট থেকে অভিযোগ তুলে নিতে বলে এবং আপোষ-নিষ্পত্তি করে দেওয়ার বিনিময়ে কিছু খরচ চায়', যোগ করেন তাসলিমা খাতুন।

এ বিষয়টি সম্পর্কে জানতে চাইলে বগুড়া ধুনট উপজেলা নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তা খৃষ্টফার হিমেল রিছিল দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বলেন, 'আমি এখনও আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে এ ধরণের কোনো নোটিশ বা আদেশ পাইনি। পেলে সে অনুযায়ী ব্যবস্থা নেব।'

ধুনট থানার ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা মো. সাইদুল আলম তার বিরুদ্ধে আনা এসব অভিযোগ অস্বীকার করেন।

তিনি দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বলেন, 'তাসলিমা খাতুন ও তার স্বামীর মধ্যে গণ্ডগোল চলছিল। দীর্ঘদিন ধরে তাসলিমা তার দুই সন্তান নিয়ে ধুনটে বাবা-মা'র কাছে থাকেন। প্রায় তিন মাস আগে তার সিএনজি চালক স্বামী সন্তানদের সঙ্গে দেখা করতে আসে। তখন মারামারির ঘটনা ঘটলে সিএনজি চালিত অটো রিক্সা রেখে পালিয়ে যায় স্বামী মঞ্জুর।'

'এর পরে সিএনজি থানায় আনা হয়। পরবর্তীতে মঞ্জুর তার কাগজ পত্র দেখিয়ে সিএনজি নিয়ে যায়। পরে তাসলিমা ভরণপোষণের জন্য আমার কাছে মামলা করতে আসলে আমি বলি ভরণপোষণের মামলা তো সরাসরি আদালতে করতে হবে',  বলেন ওসি।

'মামলা আপোষ করার জন্য চাপ দেওয়া আপোষ করে দেওয়ার জন্য আমি কোনো টাকা-পয়সা চাইনি', দাবি করেন ওসি সাইদুল ইসলাম।

চট্টগ্রামে পহেলা বৈশাখ অনুষ্ঠানের মঞ্চে ভাঙচুর, আটক ৭

একদল দুষ্কৃতকারী চট্টগ্রাম শহরের ডিসি হিল এলাকায় পহেলা বৈশাখ উপলক্ষে সজ্জিত ব্যানার, ফেস্টুন ও সাইড স্টেজের কিছু অংশ ভাঙচুর করে এবং ছিঁড়ে ফেলে।

রোববার রাতে ঘটনার সময় পুলিশ হামলাকারীদের ধাওয়া দেয় এবং ঘটনাস্থল থেকে সাতজনকে আটক করে।

প্রত্যক্ষদর্শীরা জানান, কিছু মানুষ 'ফ্যাসিস্টদের দোসর হুঁশিয়ার!', 'আওয়ামী লীগের দালালরা সাবধান!'—স্লোগান দিয়ে মিছিল করতে থাকে। এক পর্যায়ে মিছিলে অংশগ্রহণকারীরা পুলিশের উপস্থিতিতেই মঞ্চে হামলা চালায়।

এই ঘটনার প্রতিবাদে আয়োজক 'সম্মিলিত পহেলা বৈশাখ উদযাপন পরিষদ' বাংলা নববর্ষ উদযাপন সব কর্মসূচি স্থগিত করেছে।

আটকের বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করে চট্টগ্রাম মেট্রোপলিটন পুলিশের (সিএমপি) দক্ষিণ বিভাগের উপকমিশনার (ডিসি) মো. আলমগীর হোসেন দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বলেন, '৩০ থেকে ৪০ জনের একটি দল মূল মঞ্চে হামলার চেষ্টা করে। তবে তারা ব্যর্থ হয়।'

'মঞ্চের আশেপাশের কিছু ব্যানার ও ফেস্টুন ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়। পালিয়ে যাওয়ার চেষ্টারত সাতজনকে পুলিশ তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে সাতজনকে আটক করে', যোগ করেন তিনি।

তিনি আরও জানান, 'আমরা তাদের রাজনৈতিক পরিচয় যাচাই করছি।'

পুলিশ ও জেলা প্রশাসনের সূত্র জানায়, বিএনপি-সমর্থিত জাতীয়তাবাদী সামাজিক সাংস্কৃতিক সংস্থা (জাসাস) ও সমমনা সংগঠনগুলো ইতোমধ্যে সম্মিলিত পহেলা বৈশাখ উদযাপন পরিষদের ব্যানারে ডিসি হিলের নববর্ষ উদযাপনের অনুষ্ঠান নিয়ে আপত্তি জানিয়েছে। 

যার ফলে, গত দুই দিন ধরে সেখানে অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজনকে কেন্দ্র করে উত্তেজনা বিরাজ করছিল।

এই বিষয়ে রোববার বিকেলে ডিসি অফিসে জাসাসের সঙ্গে একটি বৈঠক হলেও দুই পক্ষ কোনো সমাধানে পৌঁছাতে পারেনি।

সম্মিলিত পহেলা বৈশাখ উদযাপন পরিষদের সমন্বয়ক সুচরিত দাশ খোকন দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বলেন, '৩০-৪০ জনের একটি দল মিছিল নিয়ে "ফ্যাসিস্ট দোসররা হুঁশিয়ার, আওয়ামী লীগের দালালরা সাবধান"—স্লোগান দিতে দিতে, পুলিশের সামনেই এসে মঞ্চ ভাঙচুর করে। এই ঘটনার প্রতিবাদে আমরা এবারের পহেলা বৈশাখের সব কর্মসূচি বর্জনের সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছি।'

তিনি আরও বলেন, 'এই অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজন করতে গিয়ে গত দুই দিনে আমরা অনেক প্রতিবন্ধকতা ও নাটকীয়তার সম্মুখীন হয়েছি।'

সুচরিত দাশ খোকন আরও জানান, রোববার বিকেলেই ডিসি অফিস তাদেরকে ২৩টি সংগঠনের তালিকা দেয়, যার মধ্যে আছে বোধন, উদীচী ও প্রমাসহ আরও কিছু সাংস্কৃতিক সংগঠন। এই সংগঠনগুলো যাতে মঞ্চে পরিবেশ না করে, তা নিশ্চিত করতে বলা হয়।

'এর কিছুক্ষণ পরেই এই ভাঙচুরের ঘটনা ঘটে। এটা প্রশাসনের ব্যর্থতা', যোগ করেন তিনি।

তবে কে বা কারা ভাঙচুর চালিয়েছে তা তিনি স্পষ্টভাবে জানাননি।

এর আগে রোববার সকালে সম্মিলিত বাংলা নববর্ষ উদযাপন মঞ্চ নামের একটি সংগঠন জেলা প্রশাসকের কার্যালয়ের সামনে মানববন্ধন করে ও স্মারকলিপি জমা দেয়।

এই কর্মসূচির আয়োজনে নেতৃত্ব দেয় বিএনপি-সমর্থিত সাংস্কৃতিক সংগঠন জাসাস ও তাদের সহযোগী সংগঠনগুলো।

স্মারকলিপিতে দাবি জানানো হয় যে, 'ফ্যাসিস্ট হাসিনার' ঘনিষ্ঠ সম্পর্ক রাখা সংগঠনগুলোকে বর্ষবরণের এই আয়োজনে অংশ নিতে দেওয়া যাবে না।

এ বিষয়ে যোগাযোগ করলে অতিরিক্ত জেলা প্রশাসক (সার্বিক) মো. কামরুজ্জামান দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বলেন, 'জাসাস অভিযোগ করেছে যে, অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজনকারী অধিকাংশ সংগঠন পূর্ববর্তী ফ্যাসিস্ট সরকারের সঙ্গে সম্পৃক্ত। আমরা দুই পক্ষকে নিয়ে একাধিক বৈঠক করেছি, কিন্তু কোনো সমাধানে পৌঁছাতে পারিনি। সাধারণ মানুষের কথা ভেবে নিরাপত্তা ঝুঁকি থাকায় সেখানে বিশেষ নিরাপত্তা ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হয়েছে।'

তিনি আরও বলেন, 'বিষয়টি আমরা তদন্ত করছি। আমাদের পক্ষ থেকে মূল অনুষ্ঠান নির্ধারিত সময় অনুযায়ী শিল্পকলা একাডেমিতে অনুষ্ঠিত হবে।'

ডিসি হিলে পহেলা বৈশাখের অনুষ্ঠান সকাল ৬টা ৩০ মিনিটে শুরু হওয়ার কথা ছিল।

প্রায় ৫৫টি সাংস্কৃতিক সংগঠন সেখানে নাম নিবন্ধন করেছিল।

আয়োজকরা জানান, ডিসি হিল এলাকায় জেলা প্রশাসকের সরকারি বাসভবন থাকায় শুরু থেকেই অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজনে অনুমতি নিতে জটিলতার মধ্য দিয়ে যেতে হয়েছে।

এই বিষয়ে বক্তব্য জানতে জাসাসের চট্টগ্রাম শাখার সদস্য সচিব মামুনুর রশীদ শিপনের সংগে একাধিকবার ফোনে যোগাযোগের চেষ্টা করা হলেও তিনি সাড়া দেননি।

North Carolina flu-related deaths at all-time high

State health officials reported more than 500 flu-related deaths for the 2024-25 respiratory virus season, nearly on par with Covid deaths.

North Carolina has reported a record number of flu deaths this respiratory virus season, health officials said this week.

More than 500 flu-related deaths were reported for the 2024-25 respiratory virus season, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said in a Wednesday press release. The figure marked the highest statewide total since reporting began in 2009.

“These numbers would be even higher without the dedication of the NCDHHS Division of Public Health and local health department teams who provide flu education, distribute vaccines, and support treatment and prevention efforts in all 100 counties,” North Carolina Health and Human Services Secretary Devdutta Sangvai said in a statement.

“Their work saves lives every single day,” he added.

Flu-related deaths in the state were nearly on par with deaths caused by Covid-19, which is known to be a more severe illness than the flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC recorded approximately 600 Covid-19 deaths in the state between October and April.

Health officials warned that federal funding cuts to the state “have impacted the ability to protect the health and well-being of North Carolinians, leaving the state vulnerable to public health threats.”

In recent weeks, the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency has been making steep cuts to the federal workforce and funding for scientific research across the country.

A representative for DOGE did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment.

The funding cuts led to the elimination of more than 80 jobs and a loss of at least $100 million for the department, according to the press release.

“Despite these challenges, trust in public health remains high,” the release said.

“This trust is a clear signal that public health is more important than ever,” said Dr. Kelly Kimple, the interim state health director and NCDHHS’ chief medical officer, in a press release. “I’m incredibly proud of the dedication and impact of our public health teams across the state.”

“Now is the time to match that trust with stable, long-term investment in our public health workforce and infrastructure so we can continue to protect our communities for years to come,” Kimple added.
