Helicopter in Hudson River crash lacked flight recorders, officials sa

As crews continued to search for parts in the Hudson River, Sen. Chuck Schumer called for more regulation of helicopter tours.

As crews continue to search for key parts of the helicopter that crashed into the Hudson River, they won’t find one piece of evidence that is usually critical to investigators.

“The helicopter was not equipped with any flight recorders. No onboard video recorders or camera recorders have been recovered and none of the helicopter avionics onboard recorded information that could be used for the investigation,” the National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement Saturday.

Thursday’s deadly accident claimed the lives of a family of five visiting from Spain and the pilot.

“Divers from the New York Police Department are continuing to search for the helicopter’s main rotor, main gear box, tail rotor and a large portion of the tail boom. Side-scanning sonar is being used to identify potential locations of wreckage,” the NTSB’s statement said.

According to officials, the last major inspection of the helicopter was on March 1, and before the crash it completed seven tour flights.

Now, lawmakers are calling on federal agencies to increase regulations and protocols for these types of helicopter tours.

“The company has an operating certificate from the [Federal Aviation Administration] that is called a ‘Part 91.’ It does not require the entire team of people who oversee or fly the helicopter to have the level of training and experience that commercial and passenger helicopter companies have to have,” Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday at a press conference.

He spoke at the Wall Street Heliport in Manhattan, where New York Helicopter Tours launched the fatal Bell 206 L-4 flight on Thursday.

Officials say the pilot, Seankese Johnson, was a Navy veteran who earned his commercial pilot’s license in 2023 and logged over 800 hours of flight time as of March.

“Right now, New York Helicopter Tours is under federal investigation for these deaths. But first, I am urging the FAA to pull their operating certificate immediately and cease flights until their full investigation is concluded,” Schumer added.

New York Helicopter Tours said it is fully cooperating with the federal investigation.

The Democratic senator also called for increased federal regulations at all New York City-area helicopter tour companies — flights he described as “risky.”

“I’m also demanding that the FAA increase what are called ‘ramp inspections’ at other metro-area helicopter tour companies,” he added. “A ramp inspection is a surprise inspection. They show up unannounced and check if things are on the level and the helicopters are doing the right thing.”

Schumer’s stance contrasts sharply with that of Mayor Eric Adams, who voiced full support for tourism helicopters in New York City during an interview with Fox 5 on Friday, stating he would not add further regulations.

“That is part of the attraction of businesses being in the city, people coming to the city, seeing the city from the air. As part of the attraction, what we must do is make sure it’s safe, make sure it is done correctly,” Adams said.

Trump is in 'excellent health,' White House physician says

 The president’s annual exam Friday showed normal vital signs and neurological functioning; it also noted scarring on his ear from the assassination attempt at a rally last summer.

WASHINGTON — White House physician Sean Barbabella released a memo detailing the results of President Donald Trump’s annual physical on Friday, writing that the president is in “excellent health.”

Trump exhibits “robust cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and general physical function,” Barbabella wrote. “His active lifestyle continues to contribute significantly to his well-being.”

“President Trump’s days include participation in multiple meetings, public appearances, press availability, and frequent victories in golf events,” he continued. “President Trump exhibits excellent cognitive and physical health and is fully fit to execute the duties of the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State.”

The physical included diagnostic and laboratory testing, according to Barbabella’s memo. The physician also consulted with 14 specialty consultants, he added.

Barbabella noted in his diagnostic summary that Trump has scarring on his right hear from a gunshot wound, referring to the assassination attempt on the president in Butler, Pennsylvania, last summer.

The memo said Trump’s heart, lungs, eyes, hearing and abdominal exam results were all normal. His blood pressure was slightly elevated, at 128/74, and the dermatological exam revealed “some minor sun damage and a few benign lesions,” the memo said.

His routine lab work appeared to be within the normal ranges for blood count, kidney, liver and thyroid tests. Trump’s cholesterol appeared to be well controlled though medication, and his blood sugar is within normal limits.

The president also underwent “a comprehensive neurological examination,” which did not indicate any abnormalities, Barbabella wrote.

Trump completed the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, a common screening tool for cognitive impairment that typically takes about 10 minutes, achieving a normal result with a score of 30 out of 30, Barbabella said.

The president previously boasted about his score on that cognitive test, which is designed to assess mild cognitive impairment or early dementia.

“It’s like you’ll go: ‘Person, woman, man, camera, TV.’ So they say, ‘Could you repeat that?’ So I said, ‘Yeah. So it’s ‘person, woman, man, camera, TV.’ ‘OK, that’s very good. If you get it in order you get extra points,’” Trump said in 2020.

In November, Trump became the oldest person elected president. The record was previously held by Biden, whose age prompted concerns from voters.

The memo also indicated that Trump has lost 20 pounds since his last released physical in 2020. The memo said the president weighs 224 pounds with a body mass index of 28, putting him in the overweight category.

The president’s medicines listed in the memo include cholesterol medication and aspirin for heart disease prevention as well as a topical steroid cream as needed for his skin.

'A Minecraft Movie' stomps to $80.6 million in second weekend

 After doubling expectations in its $300 million global debut, “A Minecraft Movie” is already the highest grossing Hollywood release of 2025.

After just two weeks in theaters, “A Minecraft Movie” is already the highest grossing Hollywood release of 2025.

The Warner Bros. video game adaptation followed up its blockbuster opening with a second weekend of $80.6 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. Worldwide, it’s quickly surpassed $550 million.

After doubling expectations in its $300 million global debut, “A Minecraft Movie” continued to draw audiences unlike anything else this year. The film, directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, slid 50% in its second go-around in U.S. and Canadian theaters — an impressive hold after such a big debut.

Though critics slammed the movie (46% “fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes) and audience scores were merely good (a “B+” CinemaScore), “A Minecraft Movie” latched on with moviegoers who have increasingly turned out in droves for big-budget videogame adaptations.

“A Minecraft Movie,” a $150 million co-production of Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, has helped -– at least for now -– reinvigorate theaters after a dismal start to the year. Overall ticket sales were double that of the same weekend in 2024, according to Comscore. Before “A Minecraft,” box office revenues trailed last year’s by 11%, but have now virtually pulled even. (2025 grosses still trail 2019’s by 31%, according to Comscore.)

None of the weekend’s new releases — Angel Studios’ “The King of Kings,” the Walt Disney Co.’s “The Amateur,” Universal Pictures’ “Drop” or A24’s “Warfare” — came close to challenging “Minecraft,” but several films outperformed expectations.

“The King of Kings,” an animated tale of Jesus’ life aimed at Christian audiences, came in second with $19.1 million in 3,200 theaters.

The film, loosely based on a children’s book by Charles Dickens, includes a starry voice cast led by Oscar Isaac, Kenneth Branagh and Uma Thurman.

With an enviable “A+” CinemaScore from audiences, “The King of Kings” is posed to capitalize in the coming week before Easter. Part three of Fathom Entertainment’s TV series, “The Chosen: Last Supper,” also looked to appeal to Christian audiences. It launched with $6.2 million from 2,296 cinemas.

“The Amateur,” a 20th Century production starring Rami Malek as a CIA cryptographer hunting down his wife’s killers, debuted with $15 million domestically, plus another $17.2 million overseas. Critics deemed the revenge thriller an awkward star vehicle for Malek, who also produced. “The Amateur” cost $60 million to make.

“Warfare,” director Alex Garland’s follow-up to 2024’s “Civil War,” opened with $8.3 million in ticket sales from 2,670 theaters.

Garland co-wrote and co-directed the A24 release with Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza, who based the film on 2006 mission he and his fellow Navy SEALs undertook during the war. “Warfare,” which cost about $20 million to make, was lauded by critics as an uncommonly realistic portrait of combat.

“Drop,” the latest thriller from Blumhouse Productions, debuted with $7.5 million from 3,085 theaters.

Christopher Landon’s film stars Meghann Fahy (“The White Lotus”) as a single-mom widow on a first date (Brandon Sklenar) who’s being terrorized by an unknown person by messages to her phone. “Drop,” which premiered at SXSW, cost less than $10 million to produce.

বগুড়ায় ওসির বিরুদ্ধে মামলা আপসে চাপ ও ঘুষ চাওয়ার অভিযোগ

বগুড়ার ধুনট থানার ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তার (ওসি) বিরুদ্ধে এক নারীকে মামলা আপসের জন্য চাপ দেওয়া ও ঘুষ চাওয়ার অভিযোগ এসেছে। 

এসব অভিযোগ আমলে নিয়ে স্বপ্রণোদিত হয়ে বিষয়টি আরও তদন্তের জন্য ধুনট উপজেলা নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তাকে আদেশ দিয়েছে ধুনট আমলী আদালত।

আজ দুপুরে এই আদেশ দেন বগুড়া ধুনট আমলী আদালতের বিচারক জুডিশিয়াল ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট মো. লোকমান হাকিম।

ধুনট আমলী আদালতের বেঞ্চ সহকারী মো. কামরুজ্জামান দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করেন।

তিনি জানান, সরেজমিনে ঘটনা তদন্ত করে আগামী ৩০ দিনের মধ্যে তদন্ত প্রতিবেদন বিচারকের কাছে জমা দেওয়ার নির্দেশ দেওয়া হয়েছে।  

আদালতের পর্যবেক্ষণে উল্লেখ করা হয়, একজন সাংবাদিকের ফেসবুক প্রোফাইলে ভুক্তভোগীর একটি ভিডিও দেখে ফৌজদারি কার্যবিধি, ১৮৯৮ এর ধারা ১৯০(১)(সি) অনুযায়ী বিচারক এই বিষয়ে স্বপ্রনোদিত হয়ে তদন্তের নির্দেশ দেন।

ভিডিওতে ধুনট উপজেলার বেলকুচি গ্রামের মোছা. তাসলিমা খাতুন নামের এক নারী ধুনট থানার ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা মো. সাইদুল আলমের বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ আনেন। তিনি জানান, ওসি সাইদুল আদালতে করা মামলাটি আপসের মাধ্যমে নিষ্পত্তির জন্য চাপ দেন।

পাশাপাশি পুলিশের ওই কর্মকর্তা মামলা আপসের খরচ বাবদ তার কাছে ঘুষ চেয়েছেন বলেও দাবি করেন তাসলিমা।

পুলিশ কর্মকর্তার বিরুদ্ধে তাসলিমার অপর অভিযোগ, তিনি ঘটনাস্থল থেকে উদ্ধারকৃত সিএনজি চালিত অটো-রিক্সাটি টাকার বিনিময়ে অভিযুক্তের কাছে হস্তান্তর করেছেন

এসব তথ্য আদালতের পর্যবেক্ষণে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে।

এ বিষয়ে তাসলিমা খাতুনের (৩২) সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করা হলে তিনি দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বলেন, 'আমার স্বামী একজন নেশাগ্রস্থ ব্যক্তি। প্রায় এক বছর আগে আমি আমার দুই ছেলে সন্তানকে নিয়ে বাবার বাড়ি চলে আসি। এর পর বগুড়া নারী ও শিশু নির্যাতন ট্রাইব্যুনাল ২ এ সন্তানের ভরণপোষণ দাবিতে মামলা করি। এর পর থেকে আমার স্বামী আমাকে এক লাখ টাকা নিয়ে তালাক দিতে বলে। তবে আমি এতে রাজি হইনি, কারণ বিয়েতে দেনমোহর ছিল আড়াই লাখ টাকা।'

'তিন মাস আগে একদিন আমার বাবার বাড়িতে সিএনজি নিয়ে এসে সন্তানদের নিয়ে যেতে চাইলে আমি বাধা দেই। এরপর সে আমাকে মারধর করার চেষ্টা করে। এ সময় গ্রামের মানুষ ছুটে আসলে সে পালিয়ে যায়।'

তাসলিমা জানান, পরবর্তীতে মারধরের অভিযোগ নিয়ে ধুনট থানায় গেলে ওসি মামলা নিয়ে আপোষের দিন ধার্য করে এবং আমার স্বামীর সিএনজিটি ঘটনাস্থল থেকে থানায় নিয়ে আসে।

তবে নির্ধারিত দিনে থানায় গিয়ে তিনি জানতে পারেন, টাকার বিনিময়ে সিএনজিটি তার স্বামীকে ফিরিয়ে দিয়েছেন ওই ওসি। 

'তারপর থেকে থানায় গেলে ওসি এক লাখ টাকার বিনিময়ে কোর্ট থেকে অভিযোগ তুলে নিতে বলে এবং আপোষ-নিষ্পত্তি করে দেওয়ার বিনিময়ে কিছু খরচ চায়', যোগ করেন তাসলিমা খাতুন।

এ বিষয়টি সম্পর্কে জানতে চাইলে বগুড়া ধুনট উপজেলা নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তা খৃষ্টফার হিমেল রিছিল দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বলেন, 'আমি এখনও আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে এ ধরণের কোনো নোটিশ বা আদেশ পাইনি। পেলে সে অনুযায়ী ব্যবস্থা নেব।'

ধুনট থানার ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা মো. সাইদুল আলম তার বিরুদ্ধে আনা এসব অভিযোগ অস্বীকার করেন।

তিনি দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বলেন, 'তাসলিমা খাতুন ও তার স্বামীর মধ্যে গণ্ডগোল চলছিল। দীর্ঘদিন ধরে তাসলিমা তার দুই সন্তান নিয়ে ধুনটে বাবা-মা'র কাছে থাকেন। প্রায় তিন মাস আগে তার সিএনজি চালক স্বামী সন্তানদের সঙ্গে দেখা করতে আসে। তখন মারামারির ঘটনা ঘটলে সিএনজি চালিত অটো রিক্সা রেখে পালিয়ে যায় স্বামী মঞ্জুর।'

'এর পরে সিএনজি থানায় আনা হয়। পরবর্তীতে মঞ্জুর তার কাগজ পত্র দেখিয়ে সিএনজি নিয়ে যায়। পরে তাসলিমা ভরণপোষণের জন্য আমার কাছে মামলা করতে আসলে আমি বলি ভরণপোষণের মামলা তো সরাসরি আদালতে করতে হবে',  বলেন ওসি।

'মামলা আপোষ করার জন্য চাপ দেওয়া আপোষ করে দেওয়ার জন্য আমি কোনো টাকা-পয়সা চাইনি', দাবি করেন ওসি সাইদুল ইসলাম।

চট্টগ্রামে পহেলা বৈশাখ অনুষ্ঠানের মঞ্চে ভাঙচুর, আটক ৭

একদল দুষ্কৃতকারী চট্টগ্রাম শহরের ডিসি হিল এলাকায় পহেলা বৈশাখ উপলক্ষে সজ্জিত ব্যানার, ফেস্টুন ও সাইড স্টেজের কিছু অংশ ভাঙচুর করে এবং ছিঁড়ে ফেলে।

রোববার রাতে ঘটনার সময় পুলিশ হামলাকারীদের ধাওয়া দেয় এবং ঘটনাস্থল থেকে সাতজনকে আটক করে।

প্রত্যক্ষদর্শীরা জানান, কিছু মানুষ 'ফ্যাসিস্টদের দোসর হুঁশিয়ার!', 'আওয়ামী লীগের দালালরা সাবধান!'—স্লোগান দিয়ে মিছিল করতে থাকে। এক পর্যায়ে মিছিলে অংশগ্রহণকারীরা পুলিশের উপস্থিতিতেই মঞ্চে হামলা চালায়।

এই ঘটনার প্রতিবাদে আয়োজক 'সম্মিলিত পহেলা বৈশাখ উদযাপন পরিষদ' বাংলা নববর্ষ উদযাপন সব কর্মসূচি স্থগিত করেছে।

আটকের বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করে চট্টগ্রাম মেট্রোপলিটন পুলিশের (সিএমপি) দক্ষিণ বিভাগের উপকমিশনার (ডিসি) মো. আলমগীর হোসেন দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বলেন, '৩০ থেকে ৪০ জনের একটি দল মূল মঞ্চে হামলার চেষ্টা করে। তবে তারা ব্যর্থ হয়।'

'মঞ্চের আশেপাশের কিছু ব্যানার ও ফেস্টুন ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়। পালিয়ে যাওয়ার চেষ্টারত সাতজনকে পুলিশ তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে সাতজনকে আটক করে', যোগ করেন তিনি।

তিনি আরও জানান, 'আমরা তাদের রাজনৈতিক পরিচয় যাচাই করছি।'

পুলিশ ও জেলা প্রশাসনের সূত্র জানায়, বিএনপি-সমর্থিত জাতীয়তাবাদী সামাজিক সাংস্কৃতিক সংস্থা (জাসাস) ও সমমনা সংগঠনগুলো ইতোমধ্যে সম্মিলিত পহেলা বৈশাখ উদযাপন পরিষদের ব্যানারে ডিসি হিলের নববর্ষ উদযাপনের অনুষ্ঠান নিয়ে আপত্তি জানিয়েছে। 

যার ফলে, গত দুই দিন ধরে সেখানে অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজনকে কেন্দ্র করে উত্তেজনা বিরাজ করছিল।

এই বিষয়ে রোববার বিকেলে ডিসি অফিসে জাসাসের সঙ্গে একটি বৈঠক হলেও দুই পক্ষ কোনো সমাধানে পৌঁছাতে পারেনি।

সম্মিলিত পহেলা বৈশাখ উদযাপন পরিষদের সমন্বয়ক সুচরিত দাশ খোকন দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বলেন, '৩০-৪০ জনের একটি দল মিছিল নিয়ে "ফ্যাসিস্ট দোসররা হুঁশিয়ার, আওয়ামী লীগের দালালরা সাবধান"—স্লোগান দিতে দিতে, পুলিশের সামনেই এসে মঞ্চ ভাঙচুর করে। এই ঘটনার প্রতিবাদে আমরা এবারের পহেলা বৈশাখের সব কর্মসূচি বর্জনের সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছি।'

তিনি আরও বলেন, 'এই অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজন করতে গিয়ে গত দুই দিনে আমরা অনেক প্রতিবন্ধকতা ও নাটকীয়তার সম্মুখীন হয়েছি।'

সুচরিত দাশ খোকন আরও জানান, রোববার বিকেলেই ডিসি অফিস তাদেরকে ২৩টি সংগঠনের তালিকা দেয়, যার মধ্যে আছে বোধন, উদীচী ও প্রমাসহ আরও কিছু সাংস্কৃতিক সংগঠন। এই সংগঠনগুলো যাতে মঞ্চে পরিবেশ না করে, তা নিশ্চিত করতে বলা হয়।

'এর কিছুক্ষণ পরেই এই ভাঙচুরের ঘটনা ঘটে। এটা প্রশাসনের ব্যর্থতা', যোগ করেন তিনি।

তবে কে বা কারা ভাঙচুর চালিয়েছে তা তিনি স্পষ্টভাবে জানাননি।

এর আগে রোববার সকালে সম্মিলিত বাংলা নববর্ষ উদযাপন মঞ্চ নামের একটি সংগঠন জেলা প্রশাসকের কার্যালয়ের সামনে মানববন্ধন করে ও স্মারকলিপি জমা দেয়।

এই কর্মসূচির আয়োজনে নেতৃত্ব দেয় বিএনপি-সমর্থিত সাংস্কৃতিক সংগঠন জাসাস ও তাদের সহযোগী সংগঠনগুলো।

স্মারকলিপিতে দাবি জানানো হয় যে, 'ফ্যাসিস্ট হাসিনার' ঘনিষ্ঠ সম্পর্ক রাখা সংগঠনগুলোকে বর্ষবরণের এই আয়োজনে অংশ নিতে দেওয়া যাবে না।

এ বিষয়ে যোগাযোগ করলে অতিরিক্ত জেলা প্রশাসক (সার্বিক) মো. কামরুজ্জামান দ্য ডেইলি স্টারকে বলেন, 'জাসাস অভিযোগ করেছে যে, অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজনকারী অধিকাংশ সংগঠন পূর্ববর্তী ফ্যাসিস্ট সরকারের সঙ্গে সম্পৃক্ত। আমরা দুই পক্ষকে নিয়ে একাধিক বৈঠক করেছি, কিন্তু কোনো সমাধানে পৌঁছাতে পারিনি। সাধারণ মানুষের কথা ভেবে নিরাপত্তা ঝুঁকি থাকায় সেখানে বিশেষ নিরাপত্তা ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হয়েছে।'

তিনি আরও বলেন, 'বিষয়টি আমরা তদন্ত করছি। আমাদের পক্ষ থেকে মূল অনুষ্ঠান নির্ধারিত সময় অনুযায়ী শিল্পকলা একাডেমিতে অনুষ্ঠিত হবে।'

ডিসি হিলে পহেলা বৈশাখের অনুষ্ঠান সকাল ৬টা ৩০ মিনিটে শুরু হওয়ার কথা ছিল।

প্রায় ৫৫টি সাংস্কৃতিক সংগঠন সেখানে নাম নিবন্ধন করেছিল।

আয়োজকরা জানান, ডিসি হিল এলাকায় জেলা প্রশাসকের সরকারি বাসভবন থাকায় শুরু থেকেই অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজনে অনুমতি নিতে জটিলতার মধ্য দিয়ে যেতে হয়েছে।

এই বিষয়ে বক্তব্য জানতে জাসাসের চট্টগ্রাম শাখার সদস্য সচিব মামুনুর রশীদ শিপনের সংগে একাধিকবার ফোনে যোগাযোগের চেষ্টা করা হলেও তিনি সাড়া দেননি।

North Carolina flu-related deaths at all-time high

State health officials reported more than 500 flu-related deaths for the 2024-25 respiratory virus season, nearly on par with Covid deaths.

North Carolina has reported a record number of flu deaths this respiratory virus season, health officials said this week.

More than 500 flu-related deaths were reported for the 2024-25 respiratory virus season, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said in a Wednesday press release. The figure marked the highest statewide total since reporting began in 2009.

“These numbers would be even higher without the dedication of the NCDHHS Division of Public Health and local health department teams who provide flu education, distribute vaccines, and support treatment and prevention efforts in all 100 counties,” North Carolina Health and Human Services Secretary Devdutta Sangvai said in a statement.

“Their work saves lives every single day,” he added.

Flu-related deaths in the state were nearly on par with deaths caused by Covid-19, which is known to be a more severe illness than the flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC recorded approximately 600 Covid-19 deaths in the state between October and April.

Health officials warned that federal funding cuts to the state “have impacted the ability to protect the health and well-being of North Carolinians, leaving the state vulnerable to public health threats.”

In recent weeks, the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency has been making steep cuts to the federal workforce and funding for scientific research across the country.

A representative for DOGE did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment.

The funding cuts led to the elimination of more than 80 jobs and a loss of at least $100 million for the department, according to the press release.

“Despite these challenges, trust in public health remains high,” the release said.

“This trust is a clear signal that public health is more important than ever,” said Dr. Kelly Kimple, the interim state health director and NCDHHS’ chief medical officer, in a press release. “I’m incredibly proud of the dedication and impact of our public health teams across the state.”

“Now is the time to match that trust with stable, long-term investment in our public health workforce and infrastructure so we can continue to protect our communities for years to come,” Kimple added.
